Legacy Giving
As part of your legacy, you can support the Quincy Humane Society Endowment (“Endowment”) in your estate plan by naming it as a beneficiary in your will.
Generally, there are four different options to bestow a gift in your will to the Endowment.
- Specific Sum – A specific dollar amount to be gifted (e.g. $500)
- Percentage – A percentage of the total estate (e.g. 25% of my estate, one-third of my estate, etc.)
- Personal Property – A specific gift of property distinguished with reasonable accuracy from other property that is part of the estate (e.g. my white van, the stock I own in XYZ company, all my silver, etc.)
- Residual – The amount of the estate remaining after all claims and gifts of the estate have been satisfied.
It’s important to identify the Endowment with certainty to ensure your desires are met and to avoid confusion later. Best practices consist of including the name, address, phone number, and federal tax identification number (sometimes known as an “FEIN” or “EIN”) of the Endowment in your donation clause.
As such, a donation clause in your will might look something like one of the following examples:
“I give ten thousand dollars ($10,000) earmarked for community animal education, to the Quincy Humane Society Endowment, located at PO Box 3004 in Quincy, Illinois. Quincy Humane Society has a federal tax identification number of 37-1415752.”
“I give twenty-five percent (25%) of my total estate to the Quincy Humane Society Endowment, located at PO Box 3004 in Quincy, Illinois. Quincy Humane Society has a federal tax identification number of 37-1415752.”
“I give all of the shares of XYZ company that I own to the Quincy Humane Society Endowment, located at PO Box 3004 in Quincy, Illinois. Quincy Humane Society has a federal tax identification number of 37-1415752.”
“I devise to the Quincy Humane Society Endowment, with a federal tax identification number of 37-1415752, located at PO Box 3004 in Quincy, Illinois a gift of the rest and residue of my property, wheresoever situated, whensoever acquired, and whether known to me or not.”
